Inside and out, Intercontinental Hotel can boast many fascinating ‘Peranakan’ period features – the dramatic Lobby Lounge is the standout and is as impressive as anything found elsewhere in the city, Raffles Hotel included. The white stucco façade is also faithfully restored to recreate old Chinese shophouse style. The guestrooms are a nice subtle mix of old and new, offering abundant space for the price and thoughtfully designed more with the travelling business executive in mind.
Located appropriately at Middle Road, the Intercontinental is at the heart of city life, juxtaposed between the business and the historic colonial district and just minutes from Marina Bay and the downtown core. The nearest MRT subway station is just a short walk away at Bugis which is a vibrant area of specialty shops and street markets. For a cultural fix, you’ll find the hotel equidistant between the Malay, Chinese and Indian ethnic districts.
The Peranakan heritage theme runs throughout the 403 guestroom and suites with unique panelled walls, dark polished flooring and flowing drapes. Throw in a regency-style desk and a chaise longue and you have an elegant space that blends the best of classical East and West. All rooms have TV, internet access and a separate workspace and the roomy suites have a slightly more contemporary feel.
Bars and Restaurants
The hotel has three very distinctive dining outlets ranging from casual international buffets at Olive Tree to a top notch sushi restaurant and fine Cantonese dining at Man Fu Yuan, particularly noted for its Dim Sum delights. The hotel’s two bars offer an equally sharp contrast; grab a beer at the English-style Victoria bar or dress up for canapés and cocktails in the lavish lobby lounge.
The Intercontinental swimming pool is an inviting spot to unwind with a cool cocktail or two or linger poolside for live entertainment and a BBQ grill under the stars. You can work up an appetite for dinner with a good work-out in the well equipped fitness centre, staffed by qualified trainers. There is an array of amenities to keep the business traveller comfortable and productive such as a hi-tech business centre, personal limousine service and a dedicated executive lounge.
Intercontinental Hotel is in a great spot to take full advantage of a few days of shopping and sights although the guestroom configurations and amenities are more focused towards the business traveller. That said, there is an attractive – but rather small – outdoor pool to unwind, and the hi-tech fitness centre and a good mix of atmospheres in the bars and restaurants offer just enough leisurely fun.
