Enter the premises of Goodwood Park Hotel and you’ll find yourself travelling back in time with this white and grey building. Located just at the tip of the famous Orchard Road shopping belt, Goodwood Park Hotel stands out from the sprawling modern designed shopping malls within its vicinity with its Victorian-style architecture and the almost English royal vibe that it exudes.
As you walk up the red carpet stairs up to the exquisite mirror-paneled and high ceiling lobby, allow yourself to feel just like the royals, dignitaries and personalities who have walked the exact same historical stairs for their stay in this interesting five-star hotel. Goodwood Park Hotel is not just known for its luxurious appeal but also for the rich history it holds within its walls.
Built in 1899, the premise was first used as an exclusively German enclave, known as the Teutonia Club. However, during World War One, the governing British in Singapore removed the Germans from the country, thus ending the club. In 1929, Goodwood Park Hotel was born, becoming one of the most popular hotels, even becoming the hotel of choice for the Duke of Windsor, Edward VIII. During the Second World War, the hotel’s premises became the residence for high-ranking Japanese officers.
The hotel has even ‘served its time’ as a British War Crimes Court before finally resuming business as a hotel in 1947. Goodwood Park was also the first hotel in Singapore to offer a swimming pool for its guests. In 1989, the Tower Block of the hotel was also announced as a national monument of Singapore, making it one of the two hotels that have been identified as a national monument.
Goodwood Park Hotel is ideally located along Scotts Road, which is a stone’s throw away from Singapore’s iconic shopping belt. Guests staying at this hotel will enjoy the short-walk (barely five to seven minutes) to popular malls like ION Shopping Centre, Wisma Atria, Lucky Plaza and many more.
The hotel is also nearby to Orchard MRT station (a subway stop), which gives you easy access to any part of Singapore. The plus side about Goodwood Park Hotel’s location is that despite it being almost in the heart of town, the hotel retains its tranquility by maintaining its distance from the pulsating noise of the shopping belt.
