The location is hard to beat, nestling in the midst of Singapore’s most impressive colonial architecture, yet the Carlton Hotel stands out with distinctive modern look, with three separate wings comprising 627 guestrooms. Both the lobby and public areas are impressive with pleasant art deco inspired artefacts and modern art thoughtfully placed throughout.
The phrase ‘well connected’ could have been invented for Singapore and right in the very heart of this most seamless of Asian cities, you will find the Carlton Hotel. It is located at the edge of the Colonial District just a stone’s throw from iconic Raffles Hotel. Singapore Art Museum and the National Library are also just metres away. A short five-minute stroll leads to the City Hall MRT which connects with virtually everywhere in the Lion City. You don’t need to venture far for a stylish late night either. Just across the road is the famous Chijmes enclave, a fashionable courtyard filled with hip café bars and bistros.
You have a choice of deluxe rooms, club rooms and executive suites, spread over three distinct areas – the main tower, executive wing and the premier wing. The latter focuses on providing high-end creature comforts for the modern business traveller. All rooms boast a plush king size bed, minibar, TVs and spacious work desk. Overall, the décor is smart and modern with a nice use of colour and mood lighting. There are high ceilings and wall-to-floor windows for citywide views that you will never tire of.
Bars and Restaurants
The Carlton offers two fine dining outlets, each serving up well-crafted Oriental and European fusion respectively. Award-winning Cantonese restaurant Wah Lok is also a feast for the eyes; it is a faithful recreation of an art-deco dining room complete with a centrepiece crystal chandelier. There is an inventive mix of east meets west on the Café Mosaic menu with a wide choice for lovers of hearty Mediterranean fare, be it buffet-style or a la carte. Noted for its single malt whiskies and fruity cocktails, Gravity Bar is the place to unwind in plush surroundings, or why not grab a freshly baked pastry or cake with a coffee at the casual Tuxedo Patisserie.
Although the Carlton focuses largely on the business traveller, it ticks all the right boxes for some serious leisure time. The outdoor pool is the place to unwind with a two-tier sun deck and cabanas to kick back with a cocktail or two. There is an eye-catching spa offering tempting facials, massage and body wraps while a fully equipped gym provides a host of hi-tech gadgets to work-out in style. Guests staying in a Club Room have privileged access to two stylish club lounges.
The Carlton is noted for its business-friendly options but it has a very informal atmosphere and has just enough in-house distractions for a weekend family break. Apart from the upper floor suites, most guestrooms are of a similar size, the most desirable being those with a city view. The prime location is also a big selling point – public transport options are abundant and a number of interesting sights and attractions are right on the doorstep.
